ABSTRACT

White Paper ThumbnailThere is a long and varied debate on what best constitutes quality care in long-term care (LTC) – and what measures are most effective toward achieving continuous improvement.  A variety of studies shows that quality depends on a number of factors including: leadership and organizational culture; expertise of supervisors; care tools and technology; education and training of direct care staff; teamwork; and job satisfaction.

The Bottom Line: The days of focusing on quality without concern for the bottom line are long gone. Leaders in the industry expect lower operating costs (e.g., higher staffing efficiency) and improved revenue (e.g., increased reimbursements) while providing better quality of care.

What It Means: Regardless of which quality measures best fit your organization, there is one fundamental component you must have to document, measure and ultimately improve resident care: disciplined, accurate and consistent charting of all aspects of care that you provide.  To paraphrase quality guru Dr. W. Edwards Deming, you can’t measure what you can’t see, and you can’t improve what you can’t measure.

The Takeaway: While there is a myriad of technology options in LTC to help solve these challenges, voice-assisted care is emerging as the leader of the pack. Voice has been widely used to drive better performance in supply chain management for more than a decade. Today, voice-assisted care is producing similar results in LTC by removing manual data entry and enabling caregivers to make significant strides in improving resident care.
